opening day

Mountain conditions were described as pristine over opening weekend at Steamboat’s 781 acre ski area. The snow storms that Steamboat experienced in October and early November may have been a pain at the time, but they have definitely paid off. On opening day there were 56 runs and 5 lifts open on the mountain, including Storm Peak. Although during recent seasons, the snow on opening day hasn’t been something to remember, this year’s early-season snow was some of the best snow locals and tourists had seen in years.

And the most exciting part; it’s not over yet. Forecasters have predicted a 30 percent chance of snow for tonight and it is expected the ski area will accumulate another 12 to 18 inches by Friday morning. Forecasters are also predicting some of the coldest temperatures we’ve seen this winter. On Thursday night, the National Weather Service is calling for a temperature of a freezing -4 degrees.

Although these arctic-like chills are no fun during the week, this weekend is going to make many skiers and boarders very happy! The terrain conditions will continue to remain perfect and even receive a fresh blanket of snow just in time for the weekend. From advanced to intermediate to beginner the choices of trails will continue to increase. A little advice: if you aren’t into snow sports yet, this is the BEST year to pick them up!
